Finance is often perceived as a complex subject reserved for a select "elite", mainly because it is presented and taught in an intimidating and off-putting manner.

A perfect example of this is the academic definition of the Internal Rate of Return (IRR):

“The IRR of an investment or project is the "annualized effective compounded return rate" or rate of return when the net present value (NPV) of all cash flows (both positive and negative) from the investment is assumed to be equal to zero“

In reality, though, and in simple terms, the IRR is just like the yearly interest that an investment or project is expected to generate!

So, if the IRR is 20%, it means the investment or project is expected to generate an average of 20% interest per year on the money that has been invested.

When explained this way, it's easier to see why the IRR is such an important Key Performance Indicator, right?
